Civic Education Study Trip to U.S
From November 3-11, 2018 a group of four university students and one professor from four Ukrainian universities participated in IFES’ 2018 civic education study trip to Washington, D.C. These students, together with 800 students from across Ukraine, are all enrolled in IFES’ university level civic education course, Democracy: From Theory to Practice. The course was introduced to Ukraine in 2018 at eight universities, with further expansion ongoing.
During the study trip, the group observed Election Day and met with representatives from local media, civil society organizations, Congress and academia—including a visit to The College of New Jersey (TCNJ), where TCNJ students and faculty shared with the Ukrainian delegation the various ways TCNJ students actively engage to make changes on the campus and how they realize inclusive education.
Following the visit, the Ukrainian delegation organized a series of events at their universities, sharing their insights and experiences from their visit, and noting various takeaways from the trip such as, “Democracy is not only about voting procedures and elections, it’s about protecting the rights of the people.”
