On 28 January 2019, the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) and 12 Ukrainian universities signed a Protocol of Cooperation (POC) leading to the implementation of IFES’ interactive civic education course “Democracy: from Theory to Practice.” The course will be introduced to universities’ official curriculum in the 2019-2020 academic year and onward.

These universities will join 8 universities that have begun cooperation with IFES in 2017 and have already introduced the course in the current academic year.

The university signatories of the POC include:

The introduction of the course will be preceded by the professional development and training on interactive civic education teaching methods for university-level educators.

In addition, during the course students will develop their own projects designed to solve problems in and beyond their communities. All this will help to ensure better development of students’ knowledge and skills, as well as contribute to the development of their democratic values and attitudes.

The course materials include topics of democratic principles, good governance, civil society, civic participation and human rights.

Cross-cutting themes of the course include: gender equality, elections, minority rights, inclusion of and accessibility for persons with disabilities, enfranchisement, good governance, rule of law, media literacy, digital participation, diversity, the role of money in politics, the role of youth, and, corruption.

The “Democracy: from Theory to Practice” is developed by Ukrainian and international experts and is tailored for Ukraine. It is based on global university-level civic education methodology: Strengthening Engagement through Education for Democracy (SEED). The methodology is developed by IFES’ experts and used globally for designing educational programs.

This event was made possible with funding from USAID and UK aid from the UK government.
